Travel & getting around
Ferry tickets, car rental, buses and offers for participants.
Getting to Santorini
Santorini is easy to reach by plane or ferry, from Athens and from many Aegean islands.
By air
Santorini (Thira) National Airport (JTR) has flights from Athens all year round. The flight takes about 45 minutes, with views of the Aegean and the caldera on approach. In season there are also direct flights from many European cities.
By sea
Ferries depart from Piraeus and Rafina, as well as from Crete (Heraklion), Mykonos, Paros, Naxos and other Cycladic islands. High-speed ferries take about 4.5–5 hours from Piraeus, conventional ones 7–8 hours. All arrive at Athinios Port, where you can continue by taxi, bus or rental car. Book tickets early.
Getting around the island
KTEL buses
KTEL buses link Fira with Oia, Kamari, Perissa and the other villages. Most routes start and end in Fira. They are air-conditioned and cheap, with fares around €1.80–2.50.
Car rental
Your own vehicle lets you explore villages and beaches freely. Rental offices are at the airport, Athinios Port and the main villages. Roads are narrow and parking in Fira and Oia is tight, so a small car or ATV works best.
Taxis
Taxis are few and waits can be long. Find them at the airport, Athinios Port and Fira's main square, or call one. They have no meters, so agree the fare before you go, or book a private transfer.
